State regulations written to bring order and rationality to the Parent Trigger petition process are getting a bruising debut in the Mojave Desert town of Adelanto. The recriminations and accusations of misinformation and fraud that undermined the first Parent Trigger effort in Compton and ended up in court last year are echoing in the battle over Desert Trails Elementary School, calling into question the capacity of rule makers to anticipate and deter bad conduct.

The Educated Guess: More gain, no pain NCLB waiver

Gov. Jerry Brown described his relationship with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as a “work in progress” after a face-to-face meeting last week in Washington. Californians will soon find out how much progress if the State Board of Education next week approves a very different request for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind law than the one Duncan will be expecting.

Dan Walters: Jerry Brown’s budget plan looks like a pipe dream

For the past two months, Gov. Jerry Brown has been selling the concept that were the Legislature to approve his proposed budget and voters to approve his tax increase, the state’s fiscal house would be repaired.

Community colleges should take over all adult school programs from cash-strapped school districts, the Little Hoover Commission, a state watchdog agency, recommended yesterday.

The commission pointed out in a just-released report that successful examples already exist for such a model, most notably in San Diego and in San Francisco.

Benicia Patch: Effort to Show Support for BHS Principal Jensen Takes New Form

There are now two Facebook pages supporting Gary Jensen as principal at Benicia High School.

Benicians now have another tool at their disposal to show their support for the embattled principal at Benicia High School, Gary Jensen.  A recently launched Facebook page allows people to sign a petition that will presented to the school board at their regularly scheduled meeting this Thursday, March 1 at he district offices.
