Daily Republic: FSUSD school board approves new election districts

FAIRFIELD — A decision was finally made on a proposal to create election districts for school board members Thursday after more than a year of discussion.

Many members of the public came to sound off on an issue that will likely affect the make-up of the school board for the next 10 years.

The Fairfield-Suisun School District will consist of seven districts from around the two cities.

Currently, anyone from Fairfield or Suisun City can run for any of the seven seats on the board. Discussions to switch from at-large elections and create individual districts, like those used for county supervisors, began in January 2011 as a way to get more representation for underrepresented groups, such as Hispanics, blacks and Asians.
