Dixon Tribune’s Facebook Wall: Teachers hope to bring PE educators back to Dixon’s schools

Brianna Boyd, Editor

Just like every other school district in California, Dixon Unified has faced devastating cuts in recent years, but few have rocked the teachers, staff and students at Dixon’s elementary schools more than the loss of elementary physical education specialists and other prep teachers.

It is no secret within Dixon Unified that the current physical education model at the elementary level is far from ideal. Although most agree the method has improved since the 2009-10 school year – when the elementary prep specialists were first eliminated and the daily physical education activities were, as one teacher recently described, “yard control” – the fact there is only one teacher and one PE assistant overseeing an entire grade outside for physical education makes supervision challenging and standards difficult to address.
