Raising her right hand, longtime educator Lisette Estrella-Henderson made history during a swearing-in ceremony Monday night in Fairfield, becoming the first Latina and only the second woman to lead Solano County schools, a history that dates to 1853.
“I take this opportunity very seriously,” the Vacaville resident said shortly after Senator Bill Dodd, D-Solano, administered the oath of office at the Solano County Office of Education in Fairfield.
Briefly reviewing the myriad responsibilities in her new job, Estrella-Henderson, 54, looking out at some 100 people, said her elevation to the SCOE’s top job as a chance for her to, perhaps, mentor “other young women, that they are capable of taking on leadership roles.”
