The Secondary Academic Institute (SAIL) for Leaders met at SCOE on March 15 to hear from Ken Williams on Instructional Leadership. SAIL workshops are for school-based leadership teams comprised of administrators, department chairs, and teacher leaders. Williams has firsthand experience with transforming challenged schools and his action-oriented presentation inspired hope, created a clear vision, and offered practical strategies to those overwhelmed by challenges. Williams spoke to SAIL participants about: * Building Leadership Capacity * Courageous Conversations Around Collaboration * The Education of Generation X, Y, and C? What do we do now? * How RtI Works in Secondary Schools * Project Based Learning and Assessment * Instructional Practices that Support the Common Core Ken Williams is a former teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He shared his experience and expertise as a trainer, speaker, coach, and consultant in education and leadership. Williams is the chief visionary officer of Unfold the Soul, LLC, a company dedicated to inspiring individuals and teams to perform at the highest level.

On March 7, SCOE’s second English Language Professional Development workshop focused on Common Core and English Language Development (ELD) and its implications for English Learner (EL) students. Title III Professional Development Goals, EL Support Strategies, EL Monitoring, and Coaching for ELD were an intricate part of this workshop. Dr. Adria Klein is professor emeritus now at California State University, San Bernardino, and visiting professor at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga. She has worked extensively with groups instrumental in creating the new common core standards for EL Students.

LONG BEACH – Jandella Faulkner crouches beside a table of busy third-graders in Jennifer Larsen’s class at Edison Elementary School. The students have pencils in hand, outlines spread around them, and a story about penguins and otters in progress.
Faulkner stands to call across the room: “Loving how this group is already talking, Ms. Larsen.” Then she swoops down on another table of young authors.
Faulkner is a teaching coach in the Long Beach school district. Her job is to train a select group of teachers at Edison Elementary, including Jennifer Larsen, in a new literacy curriculum called Write From The Beginning. It’s part of a districtwide training system that relies on teachers working with each other to improve classroom practices. So, with Faulkner’s help, Larsen and the other site coaches at Edison train their colleagues at the school how to use Write From The Beginning in their own classrooms.

FAIRFIELD — Education consultant Anthony Muhammad will discuss the development of a cohesive, positive culture in an educational setting Thursday in Vallejo.
The presentation will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Lander Hall Auditorium at Touro University, 1310 Club Drive on Mare Island. The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by Touro University ’s Graduate School of Education and Vallejo City School District .
On January 31, local educators attended a workshop at SCOE on how to embed technology seamlessly into instruction using the Common Core Standards. Educators learned how students will publish online, critically evaluate Internet resources, and use and understand multimedia’s impact. With the move to Smarter Balanced Assessment, technology permeates all Common Core curricular areas and assessment. Presenters included Geoff Belleau, SCOE’s Program Manager of Instructional Technology, and Eileen Walters, Technology Specialist from the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

On January 22, the Solano County Office of Education and the Napa County Office of Education co-hosted 45 educators from Solano and Napa counties in a workshop exploring the new Common Core State Standards for Career Technical Education. Presenters included Sheryl Ryder, ROP Manager from Napa ROP, and Polly Farina, CTE Instructional Support Specialist from SCOE. The new CTE Model Curriculum Standards and easy steps for integrating the new standards and Common Core into lessons and key assignments were discussed.
