Speaker at King breakfast encourages adults to mentor

FAIRFIELD — A call to serve as mentors to young family members and acquaintances was issued at Monday’s seventh annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Breakfast.

The event was sponsored by the Fairfield, Suisun City and Vacaville section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

Before a packed room at the Hilton Garden Inn, Ramona Bishop, superintendent of the Vallejo School District, told those gathered that “our children need to see, early on, role models that look like them.” That, she said, is difficult because of the more than 1,000 school districts in the state, there are only 26 black school superintendents. Yet, she said, blacks comprise 6 percent of the state’s population.
