Cooper Elementary School kindergartner Daniel Lopez said he’s not afraid of Solano County Sheriff’s Office K-9 officer Fedor, and that he wouldn’t be if he encountered him in the street, either.

This means mission accomplished, for Solano County Sheriff Gary Stanton and two officers who made a presentation featuring Fedor to several dozen Cooper kindergartners Thursday morning.

Vallejo Times-Herald: Vallejo school district announces changes in elementary school principals

Vallejo grade school children will see new faces next year as the Vallejo City Unified School District shuffles around various principals.

The changes come in part as a result of tightening in the administrative staff of the Academic Achievement and Accountability department, Superintendent Ramona Bishop said during Wednesday’s school board meeting.

Education Week: 20 Percent of Kids With Developmental Delays Identified Late

Today, Easter Seals is trying to spread the word about the underidentification of young children who have developmental delays.

The organization, which is pushing for a $100 million increase to the federal budget for services to young children with disabilities, is pushing for better detection of developmental delays in infants and toddlers. The current budget is about $440 million. President Obama has proposed a $20 million increase.

Dixon Patch: Dixon High Students Get Up Close With Dangers of Drinking and Driving

Daily Republic: Solano County Office of Education names educators of the year

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Office of Education on Thursday announced the 2012-13 Educator of the Year nominees.

One teacher and one school support employees will be selected as Educator of the Year at a reception on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. at the Joseph A. Nelson Community Center in Suisun City. The winners will go on to compete in the statewide competition.

Daily Republic: FSUSD superintendent recommends option to close one school

FAIRFIELD (5:23) — School Superintendent Jacki Cottingim-Dias is recommending the school board close Sullivan Middle School and use concessions from management and funding from adult education to save the district from closing an elementary school.

Cottingim-Dias had planned to publicly announce her recommendation at the end of the study session but it ran long. She told the Daily Republic her recommendation after the session.

The Educated Guess: Low marks for Brown not his ideas

California voters give Gov. Jerry Brown low marks overall for the way he has handled K-12 education. But, at the same time, they support some school reforms that he’s championing, including directing much of new revenue to poor students, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll.

SFGate: Calif. poll finds disconnect on school cuts, taxes

Nearly 80 percent of Californians oppose $5 billion in so-called trigger cuts to state schools this fall, but only a slight majority of voters support the governor’s tax plan to stop it, according to a survey of 2,000 voters released Wednesday.

Public Policy Institute of California: Statewide Survey – Californians and Education

Some findings of the current survey:

  • California’s likely voters favor raising income taxes on the wealthy to increase funding for public schools, but they oppose raising the state sales tax.
  • Just over half of likely voters—54%—would vote yes on Governor Brown’s proposed tax initiative and a strong majority oppose automatic cuts to K–12 education if the initiative is rejected.
  • An overwhelming majority prefer local control over state funds for schools.

Legislative Analyst’s Office: Recent K-12 Education Publications, Handouts and Budget Recommendations

Reject Governor’s proposal to eliminate the nonclassroom-based charter school funding determination process. Doing so would remove important fiscal oversight—potentially resulting in nonclassroom-based charter schools reducing spending on instruction-related activities. Moreover, it would increase state costs by $20 million–providing more funding for certain schools without a clear rationale.

Vallejo Times-Herald: Vallejo school board cuts bus drivers, trash truck drivers in latest budget round

An unusually divided Vallejo school board voted Wednesday night to cut more than 90 classified positions.

“I’m going to take my vote to the state and say, ‘no,'” said Raymond Victor Mommsen, who along with board President Adrienne Waterman cast the dissenting votes in a 3 to 2 roll call.

Daily Republic: FSUSD seeks names of parents interested in transitional kindergarten

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield-Suisun School District is seeking the names of families interested in enrolling their child in transitional kindergarten class, should state funding arrive.

Transitional kindergarten allows for children with fall birthdays to enter school earlier. Under the approved bill, the current entry age of 5 years old by Dec. 2 will move a month back each year until the entry date is 5 years old by Sept. 1 for the 2014-15 year.

Daily Republic: Fairfield-Suisun district releases 2012-13 school closure options

FAIRFIELD (8:37 p.m.) — The Fairfield-Suisun school board has a list of five options with a total of seven different schools to work from when it decides Thursday which elementary and middle school to close next year.

The Superintendent’s Office on Wednesday released the school closure options in advance of Thursday’s 4 p.m. study session and 6 p.m. meeting. Officials will explain how they came up with the options at the study session and the board will take public comment, discuss and possibly vote on one of the options.
