Daily Republic: Vacaville students show off skills to stress importance of music

VACAVILLE — And the bands played on. Hopefully.

Several hundred students from Vacaville schools stood in the heat Saturday afternoon, playing their best, in hopes of highlighting the importance of music in the elementary school curriculum.

As the Vacaville School District’s Governing Board faces a deficit between $4 million and $8.2 million, two full-time equivalent positions in elementary music are on the chopping block. This doesn’t sit well with Hemlock fifth-grader Erika Hansen, who is in her first year of learning the flute.
