Daily Republic: Walk (four) miles in their shoes: Reporter measures FSUSD students’ commute

FAIRFIELD — One difference between being a Grange Grizzly and a Sullivan Celtic for middle school students living near Fairview Elementary School is the commute on foot. A Grizzly walks about a half hour more each way.

A Daily Republic reporter walked the 3.8 miles Tuesday after school from Grange Middle School to the Fairview neighborhood known for its presidential street names. The trek took the reporter, who did not wear a backpack, 1 hour, 31 minutes and 50 seconds.

“It’s a long, long way,” school district board member Dave Gaut said Tuesday morning, offering good luck and advising the reporter to wear a hat to block the afternoon sun.
