Daily Republic Opinion: Fairfield-Suisun Unified sees milestones good and bad

With apologies to Charles Dickens, these are the best of times, these are the worst of times.

I am writing about the state of education in the Fairfield-Suisun School District.

The last few years have been difficult, to put it mildly. I arrived in Fairfield in September 2009, shortly after the district shuttered four schools to close a gaping budget hole.

I’m sure that was bad, but what followed has been equally bad: elimination of art, music and physical education at the elementary school level; increased class sizes; and now the planned closure of Sullivan Middle School.

The news, however, is not all bad.
