The Reporter Letters: Apology for remark, plea for understanding

I read with some sadness the letter from a 2012 Will C. Wood graduate who was offended by a remark I made at the Vacaville High School graduation (“Words matter in rivalry,” June 14). It was a joke about beach balls and how Vaca High “trounced” Will C. Wood because their beach balls came out earlier. I can only say that this off-the-cuff remark was not meant to disparage anyone. But, as we ask our students to do, I take responsibility for my words and I regret saying them and am sorry that some people were offended.
