Daily Republic: Vacaville school board member apologizes for ‘off-the-cuff’ comment

VACAVILLE — An “off-the-cuff” comment by the president of the Vacaville School District board has offended some Will C. Wood High School students and parents and reopened old wounds about equity between Wood and its crosstown rival, Vacaville High School.

Board president Michael Kitzes, in a speech June 9 at the Vacaville High School graduation, commented about the Bulldogs students playing with beach balls earlier in their graduation than their Wildcats counterparts did in theirs the previous night.

“For the last time, you have trounced Wood once again,” Kitzes told the Class of 2012.

The comments stung some on the south side of town, where Wood students live, who wrote letters to Kitzes and other board members. And they come as Wood parents and students are working on another attempt to get a football field and tennis courts at Wood.
