The Reporter: Prom case must first be heard by Dixon school district

An attempt to take school officials to court after a student was denied entrance to her prom is headed in another direction.

Dixon resident Melody Williams and her daughter, Miranda, filed a small-claims suit against Dixon Unified School District officials in connection with the April incident, seeking reimbursement for expenses incurred.

After mediation on Monday, Melody Williams told Judge Pro Tem Tom Surh that she had learned she needed to go through a different route.

Surh agreed that Williams first needed to try to address the situation administratively with the school district before coming to Solano County Small Claims Courts. He dismissed the case without prejudice, which means it can be refiled if the school district rejects the claim.
