The day came several years ago when Vanessa Vigil of Vacaville suspected her son, Elijah, had a learning disability, because he had trouble memorizing and retaining information.
So she contacted her son’s elementary teacher, then in the Travis Unified School District, writing a letter. It set into motion a process to determine if Elijah did, indeed, have a learning disability, a group of varying disorders — from dyslexia, a language processing disorder and the most common, to dyscalculia, a disability involving math, among other skills — that hinder learning.
