Benicia Herald: BUSD schools to feel pinch of water, sewer rate hikes

Should proposed water and sewer rate increases go through, Benicia Unified School District will see its bills increase, even if it consumes no more water, the Benicia City Council-School Board Liaison Committee heard Thursday.

In five years, the district’s total water bill would increase from last year’s billing of $76,849.11 to an estimated $112,485.64, and sewer rates will rise from last year’s $22,023.92 to $30,104.21, the panel was told.

Rates haven’t been increased since 2006, and haven’t kept up with either costs or debt service requirements, city engineer and interim Public Works Director Melissa Morton said.
