Daily Republic Opinion: Women educators in Solano contribute long after retirement

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is governed by seven basic purposes since its founding in 1929. The society promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Chi State was chartered in 1936 and held its first convention in Pasadena on Nov. 27, 1937.

Our chapter (Beta Psi) was chartered May 24, 1952. The late Juanita Thomasini of Fairfield sponsored me for membership and served as a mentor and role model for so many of us. We celebrated our 60th anniversary this year.

I learned that Eleanore Gallo of Vallejo has been a member since 1977. She taught elementary school in Vallejo, retired 25 years ago and at 87 is still active. Gallo drives, usually alone, to Lake Tahoe during the summers, and says she’ll reassess her driving when she’s 90.
