A one-line item on the March 7 Vacaville Unified School District agenda highlighted a big problem across the United States.

Early in the board meeting at the Educational Services Center, Kari Sousa, the district’s chief business official, updated trustees and recognized donors of AEDs, or Automated External Defibrillators, to school campuses citywide.

In her remarks, citing statistics from the American Heart Association, she noted that some 300,000 heart attacks occur annually outside of hospitals, with an average survival rate of less than 8 percent. With no care, the chance of survival falls by 7-10 percent for every minute of delayed care.
