Recently, the Solano Community College Board of Trustees discussed the pros and cons of project labor agreements (PLAs). The board is considering requiring PLAs on projects funded by the recently passed Measure Q — a decision that will affect jobs and costs of construction.
Here’s my take on the meeting: The big guns on each side — industry and union — made their arguments, followed by more than a dozen speakers, mostly employees of unionized and nonunion contractors. Workers on both sides clearly preferred their employment conditions. So it seems that job satisfaction is not an issue.
