Vallejo Times-Herald: Davis touts summer jobs program for Vallejo youth

By Rachel Raskin-Zrihen Times-Herald staff writer

The idea, school and business officials say, is to some day be able to offer paid, on-the-job training to hundreds of Vallejo youths each summer that not only keeps them busy, but ties in with what they’re learning at school.

Promoted at a recent Chamber of Commerce event by Mayor Osby Davis, the city’s summer youth job program hopefully will become more than just a way to keep teenagers constructively busy while school’s out, Vallejo City Unified School District spokeswoman Alana Shackelford said.

The Educated Guess: California ranks low in rates of attention deficit disorder

California has one of the lowest rates of diagnosis in the nation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, raising questions about the role of regional, economic and cultural differences in identifying what scientists regard as a brain disorder.

Over-diagnosing ADHD and over-prescribing medication to children has been the cause of considerable concern in education and other circles. But some researchers interviewed by EdSource Today say that the state’s relatively low rates may indicate that the condition is being under-diagnosed among some demographic groups. They suggest that some students aren’t getting the treatment they need to succeed in school.

Education Week: School Leader Group Proposes Change to Special Education Due Process

Due process hearings are adversarial, expensive, and distracting, says the American Association of School Administrators, and the organization believes it has a fix: a new process that would bring in an outside consultant who would create an education plan for a student with disabilities that parents and a school would have to follow for a mutually agreed-upon period of time before any lawsuits were filed.

In a new report, Rethinking the Special Education Due Process System, the Alexandria, Va.-based association says that the current process is so broken that tinkering around the edges will not fix it.
