In an upbeat and encouraging article about No Excuses University (May 20, “More than 160 schools part of No Excuses University”), we read of classrooms whose aim is what many of us experienced in our youth: “College: There is no other option.”
Certainly we need to encourage as many of our youth as possible to aim for college, but why not teach them about other alternatives, too? There are many other careers that don’t require college that are fulfilling and pay well. Will the students find out what our own local adult school or Solano Community College offer? Could they also investigate other local private colleges, or union apprenticeships such as carpentry and sheet metal – right here in Fairfield?
