FAIRFIELD — Just as athletes lose their edge when away from their sport, reading skills decline when three months go by without opening a book, studies show.

That achievement gap, summer over summer, adds up  and eventually it becomes nearly impossible for a student to keep up with peers who have been reading steadily.
