They are like most normal fourth-grade boys, their eyes sparkling with joy, fun-loving, filled with combustible bundles of energy.

During the lunch hour Friday at Foxboro Elementary, Noah Fernandez, 9, ate out of a metal lunchbox with Beatles imagery, sports a wide smile and a blue-green strip of dyed hair that seemed seasonally festive; Jason Karuzas, 10, smiled behind black-framed glasses and beneath a short crop of light-brown spiked hair as he ate from a tray; Lukas Marquez, his brown hair tousled, wore a black-and-white windbreaker with an Air Jordan logo and struck a somewhat serious pose for a visiting photographer. Each wore a bright blue T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Racing for a Cure.”
