Youths entering seventh and eighth grades may register for the Benicia Police Department’s Youth Citizen Police Academy.

The academy offers an introduction to law enforcement and many of the tips and tools that Benicia Police uses during daily operations.

Students will learn about arrest procedures, drugs, ethics/integrity, investigations, crime scenes and internet safety, among other topics. They will also have the opportunity to attend equipment demos, operate a speed radar gun, and get up close to the steps involved in evidence collection.

Armijo great Luis Grijalva ready to go the distance at Paris Olympics | dailyrepublic.com

Armijo High School graduate and area running legend Luis Grijalva is a month away from taking the track at Stade de France in north Paris for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad.

Grijalva is among the very best in the men’s 5,000 meters. He attended schools in Fairfield but competes for his native Guatemala as a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

On May 30 in Oslo, Norway, he set a new national record for Guatemala and a personal-best time of 12:50.58 when he finished sixth overall at the Bislett Games. The 25-year-old distance sensation entered the event ranked No. 7 in the world.

Vallejo City Council Denies ELITE Public Schools Permit to Expand into Downtown |  Post News Group

After two years of fighting for their plans, members of the Vallejo City Council by a 6-1 vote, approved an appeal that overturned the Planning Commission’s decision to allow ELITE Public Schools charter to expand into downtown Vallejo.

ELITE Public Schools had submitted an application in July 2022 for a Major Use Permit to convert a vacant office building into a high school that would accommodate 400 students plus staff. Opposition to the reconstruction soon began from members of the community.

Vallejo Project launches digital storytelling workshop – Times Herald Online

Vallejo Project will amplify the voices of middle school youth in their upcoming weeklong Digital Storytelling Workshop beginning July 15.

In partnership with Forward Learning Group and funded by the Solano County Office of Education Rise Grant, this free immersive workshop is designed to provide young storytellers with the tools and techniques needed to develop and hone their stories.

The inaugural workshop will run daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 15 through July 19, and will take place at Global Center for Success at 1055 Azuar Drive on Mare Island.

The Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) announced on Friday the launch of its new website, which is still accessible at the same domain: vcusd.org.

The new site, designed with our community in mind, features a responsive design for mobile users, a consistent and clear layout, and an accessible user interface to serve its audience better.

VCUSD’s website is a working project and will continue to undergo updates and enhancements as we grow for the 173,000 users who visited our website during the 2023-24 school year.

Travis Unified trustee to run for Fairfield council | dailyrepublic.com

Manveer Sandhu is the first to announce his candidacy for District 6 of the Fairfield City Council.

Councilwoman Pam Bertani represents the district currently, but after the 2020 census redistricting, her residence is now in District 4, for which incumbent Rick Vaccaro will not be seeking re-election.

Bertani has announced through social media her re-election bid, too.

The candidate nomination period for local city and school district elections opens on July 15.

Four special districts also could hold elections.

Additionally, there are runoff elections for 11th Assembly District, state 3rd Senate District and Congressional Districts 4, 7 and 8.

Assemblywoman Lori Wilson, D-Suisun City, is defending against Republican Dave Ennis, and Republican Thom Bogue, a Dixon councilman and former mayor, is running against Democrat Christopher Cabaldon, former West Sacramento mayor, in the open 3rd District race to replace Sen. Bill Dodd.

Leaven Kids Summer Success offers additional educational resources | dailyrepublic.com

Leaven Kids, a nonprofit committed to early childhood education, recently launched Summer Success, a six-week program that offers educational resources and tutoring to young students living in historically underserved neighborhoods throughout California and Texas.

The program seeks to address the critical issue of summer learning loss, which disproportionately affects children from low-income neighborhoods who often lose access to essential educational resources when schools close during the summer months. Without these resources, many students experience a decline in academic achievement upon returning to school in the fall.

More than third of F-S Unified budget goes into LCAP | dailyrepublic.com

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified board of trustees recently approved the $116.62 million 2024-25 Local Control and Accountability Plan.

The total represents about 36.12 % of the district’s full budget of $322.86 million.

LCAP is a three-year plan guides the district on education services for high-needs students, including foster youth, English learners and low-income students.

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified trustees recently adopted a $322.86 million 2024-25 budget.

The district used $25.02 million from last year’s fund balance to fill the difference between the $322.86 million in expenditures and the $297.84 million in revenue, leaving an estimated fund balance of $12.32 million to carry into 2025-26.

More than 80% of the budget goes to salaries and benefits, the district reported.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond today applauded the passage of AB 1955: Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today’s Youth Act (SAFETY Act) by the California Legislature to ensure all students have access to safe and supportive learning environments regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. The bill, which was supported by Superintendent Thurmond, has gone to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for his signature to become law.

F-S Unified joins teachers in ratifying one-year contract | dailyrepublic.com

There will be district-teacher labor harmony for at least one year in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.

The board of trustees on Thursday approved the agreement with the Fairfield-Suisun Unified Teachers Association, which includes an across-the-board 1.5% salary increase.

The teachers union approved the agreement, which runs from July 1 through June 2025, on June 10.
