First 5 Solano is seeking businesses that will donate at least $200 each to send children who have never attended preschool to pre-kindergarten academies.

Each tax-deductible $200 donation is matched by First 5 Solano to fund one seat in the summer preschool program. Last year, 35 businesses raised $13,500, with some donating as much as $1,000 to sponsor five children, a First 5 Solano press release said.

Dan Walters: Pre-kindergarten expansion shapes up as key budget issue – Sacramento Bee

By Dan Walters

As Gov. Jerry Brown’s new budget was receiving its initial legislative airing last week, Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson asked the governor’s budgetary point person, Keely Bosler, about “transitional kindergarten.”

Giving California’s 4-year-olds universal access to state-supported classes is the declared “No. 1 priority” for Jackson and other Democratic senators – part of a nationwide movement to expand early childhood education.

School Readiness for State’s Youngest Learners – Year 2014 (CA Dept of Education)

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is co-sponsoring legislation to provide voluntary, high-quality transitional kindergarten to every 4-year-old child in California, he announced at a Sacramento elementary school today.

Senate Bill 837 (Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento), the Kindergarten Readiness Act, builds upon the state’s existing transitional kindergarten programs to ensure that every 4-year-old has the same opportunity to attend. Torlakson is co-sponsoring the bill with Early Edge California, which works to ensure that children have the early experiences they need to help them succeed in school.

“It’s impossible to overstate how important these early years are to a child’s future success in school,” Torlakson said. “Transitional kindergarten—particularly a full-year, full-day program—can make all the difference, especially for families who may be struggling to give their young children these valuable learning opportunities.”

Early education advocates seek more support from governor | EdSource Today

By Lillian Mongeau

Gov. Jerry Brown has been lauded for major reforms that are restoring K-12 schools to fiscal health, but advocates say he hasn’t made anywhere near the same kind of commitment to funding education for children before they enter kindergarten.

As state revenues continue to grow, many early education advocates have begun to ask: When will it be our turn?

How to register a child for kindergarten – Daily Republic

By John Glidden

Kindergarten is where most 4- and 5-year-olds begin the journey outside of the family structure. They learn the building blocks of education while roaming the playground with classmates, forming friendships that can last a lifetime.

This isn’t always easy for parents. So to help, here are some steps parents need to know before the first day starts:

Cramming for kindergarten: Summer program gives young students a jump on school | EdSource Today

The 5-year-olds making animal puppets in a West Oakland classroom think they’re just doing fun arts and crafts, but they’re also the newest recruits in a kindergarten “boot camp” that teaches them essential skills they’ll need when they start school in the fall.

These students, who haven’t previously attended preschool, are attending a summer bridge program aimed at providing a crash course on all things kindergarten. The free programs, held in dozens of counties throughout the state, focus on developing skills children need to succeed in the classroom, like how to wait their turn, raise a hand to answer a question or ask for help, play cooperatively with classmates and deal with time away from family.

The Educated Guess: Kindergarten ‘redshirting’ not very common, study finds

Kindergarten “redshirting,” when parents keep a child eligible to start kindergarten out of school for an extra year, is not as prevalent as previously believed, a new study suggests. On average, only 4 percent to 5 percent of children start kindergarten a year late, according to the study by Daphna Bassok of the University of Virginia and Sean Reardon of Stanford University.

The Educated Guess: Several governors tackle early childhood education, but not Gov. Brown

By

Unlike Gov. Jerry Brown, several governors have started the year highlighting early childhood education programs, according to a story in Education Week.

Govs. Deval Patrick, D-Mass., Rick Snyder, R-Mich., and Mike Pence, R-Ind., all used January speeches to propose expansions of early childhood education programs in their states from state preschool to full-day kindergarten. Govs. Peter Shumlin, D-Vt., and Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, also talked about the importance of investing in early childhood education in January speeches, according to the Education Week story.

Daily Republic: FSUSD events to help determine kindergarten readiness

FAIRFIELD — A Fairfield-Suisun Adult School program will offer workshops on two days in February to help parents determine if their children are ready for kindergarten.

The Kindergarten Readiness Roundup will offer staggered times for several target elementary schools. A representative from each target school will be available during the scheduled time.

While several schools are targeted, children expecting to enter kindergarten at any local school are invited. In addition, if parent and child are unable to attend the session corresponding to their prospective school, they can attend another session, said Cheryl Stumbaugh, a department official at the Adult School.
