Solano board names Kathi Hill to succeed Rozzana Verder-Aliga – Vallejo Times Herald

By Lanz Christian Bañes

One way or another, Kathi Hill has always been in school.

Whether it was getting her degrees in social work, coaching her kids teams or running Planned Parenthoods Real Life Real Talk program at Vallejo High School, the Vallejo resident always seems to be on campus.

Perhaps that’s one reason the Solano County board of education appointed her as the new trustee for Area 7, representing the central and southeastern parts of Vallejo.

Doug Ford: Motivation = education – The Reporter

Sergio Jaurez Correa is a fifth-grade math teacher in Matamoros, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas. The city of nearly a half million residents is “a flash point in the war on drugs.”

His school is next to a fetid canal and “a rotten smell drifts through the cement-walled classrooms.” After five years teaching “the government-mandated curriculum” that “was mind-numberingly boring to him and his students,” he was convinced in 2010 that he had to try something different. He started searching for ideas.

Solano County schools also see drop in expulsion rates – The Reporter

By Richard Bammer

Vacaville-area educators say the number of students being suspended or expelled from public schools declined in the last year, reflecting a statewide effort to keep children in the classroom and learning.

In Vacaville Unified, some 700 students were suspended and eight were expelled in 2012-13, the year for which the most recent data is available, according to the state. The district’s suspension rate was 5.2 percent, based on a “cumulative enrollment” of 13,592, according to numbers provided by the California Department of Education in a report released Wednesday.

Overall in Solano County, where nearly 69,000 students were enrolled in public schools, the suspension rate was 9.4 percent, while the statewide percentage (based on nearly 6.5 mill

County board of education to fill vacancy – Daily Republic

By Mike Corpos

The Solano County Board of Education is accepting applications to fill the board vacancy in Trustee Area 7.

The former representative, Rozzana Verder-Aliga, resigned after being elected to the Vallejo City Council.

Trustee Area 7 is composed of areas including central, south and northeastern Vallejo.

Although the board adjusted its trustee area boundaries in 2012 as a result of the Federal Census, by law a mid-term replacement must reside in the trustee area that was in place at the start of the departing board member’s term, in this case November 2011.

Daily Republic: Solano County approves election-year switch for schools

FAIRFIELD — Requests by five local school boards to switch from odd-year elections to even-year elections have the county’s blessing.

The Solano County Board of Supervisors has approval power over requests to change election years. On Tuesday, it voted in favor of requests by the Fairfield-Suisun, Vacaville, Benicia and Vallejo school districts and the county Office of Education.

However, the board doesn’t have full discretion over such requests. A county report said the board must grant them unless it finds that the county’s ballot style, voting equipment or computer capacity cannot handle additional elections or materials.

Vallejo Times Herald Editorial: State school takeover is over; is Vallejo ready?

They were only in third grade toiling over simple math problems when well-paid officials elsewhere in the Vallejo City Unified School District were having no luck solving seemingly impossible ones.

But unlike the errant student who peeks at a classmate’s test answers, these officials chose to cheat in a more ominous way.

The result in 2004 was a school district that not only found its pockets emptied, but with serious holes where any new cash would slip unfettered through for years to come.

Daily Republic Editorial: Odd-year voting on the outs

It appears that it’s odd to be odd, at least when it comes to when you conduct elections.

In this case, it’s more a game of odd-man-out.

The cost of local elections is shared by those political and quasi-political entities that have those elections. That’s because each election has certain fixed costs. The more races on the ballot, the more those fixed costs are shared.

Daily Republic: SCOE Board of Education favors even-year elections

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Board of Education wants to switch from odd-year to even-year elections.

It voted unanimously for the move at its Wednesday special meeting. One reason listed in the board resolution is because even-year elections — which include the presidential election and other national elections — traditionally have a higher voter turnout.
