Travis school board to interview trustee candidates – Daily Republic

Three applicants for the Trustee Area 2 vacancy will be interviewed Tuesday by the Travis School District board, which is then scheduled to make the appointment.

John Dickerson, Lisa Eckhoff and Russel Barrington are the finalists for the position that came open with the death Sept. 26 of Angela Weinzinger. The trustee area covers the district boundaries except for Travis Air Force Base.

The term runs through November 2020. The winning applicant will be sworn onto the board at 6 p.m. Dec. 11.

The Latest on results of Solano County elections as the polls close on Election Day and vote counts continue. County elections officials report the next update to the vote count will come at the end of the workday Wednesday.

1:55 a.m.

Fairfield Mayor Harry Price maintains a commanding lead in his race for re-election based on the latest Election Day results posted by the Solano County Elections Office.

Price has 61.3 percent of the vote with all of the city’s 35 precincts reporting at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday. Challenger Aneta Wise has 37.88 percent.

Travis School District Area 2: Forbes looks to make experience pay off – Daily Republic

Life, very often, is about being in the right place at the right time. That’s the case behind Janet Forbes’ run for the Travis School District Board of Trustees.

Forbes, who brings to the table a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration along with 30 years of experience in marketing and another 10 years in administration with a private university, might not have been in a position to make a run at a school board seat in the past.

Having started a business with her husband, which she said is now thriving, Forbes has the time and opportunity to serve on the board – and as coincidence has it, Travis board seats came available.

Travis School District Area 2: Experience on ‘inside’ key for Barrington – Daily Republic

Russ Barrington has a plan to get elected as a Travis School District trustee and said he has something in his background that might just help him earn a seat – experience.

Trustees often start out as a parent or someone connected with the “user experience” end of things. For Barrington, his run to win an Area 2 seat on the board is something of an inside job.

His background as an analyst working directly with the Travis district, as well as other area school districts, has familiarized him with the inner workings of school district business.

Travis School District Area 2: Short tenure eventful for De Anda – Daily Republic

Travis School District Trustee Riitta De Anda has been on a pretty wild roller coaster ride in her time with the district’s governing board.

Very early on, she was part of a board that had to help steer the district through some difficult budget cuts and, now that the economy has bounced back, slowly rebuild lost programs and services.

One of her proudest accomplishments in her time with the board, she said, was helping bring different views to the table and listening to different perspectives.

The Travis Unified governing board seeks applications from district residents to fill a term left vacant by the Sept. 26 death of trustee Angela Weinzinger.

Depending upon the number of responses, board members intend to interview all or selected candidates.

Eligible candidates must be a registered voter in California and must also live within the school district’s Trustee Area 2. This area covers all territory within the district boundaries, except Travis Air Force Base.

The successful candidate will remain in office until the next regularly scheduled election for governing board members, Nov. 3, 2020, the end of Weinzinger’s four-year term.

Anyone interested in filling the final two years of the Trustee Area 2 term on the Travis School District board is encouraged to apply now.

The seat came open with the death Sept. 26 of Angela Weinzinger. The trustee area covers the district boundaries except for Travis Air Force Base.

Interviews will take place during the regular board meeting Nov. 13. The times will be set depending on the number of applicants. The successful candidate will be appointed directly after the interviews and will be sworn in at 6 p.m. Dec. 11.

TUSD trustee Weinzinger dies of heart condition – The Reporter

Longtime Travis Unified trustee Angela Weinzinger, who suffered from a prolonged heart condition, died Wednesday at her home in Vacaville.

District Superintendent Pamela Conklin made the announcement in a press release issued Friday.

“I can tell you that she was among the most selfless persons I have ever known,” Conklin said in the prepared statement. “She had a smile a mile wide. She was approachable, kind, and compassionate. She was one of those people to whom others naturally gravitated. I can truly say that she inspired the lives of all those who knew her.”

Candidate’s forum attracts council, mayoral, school board hopefuls – Daily Republic

More than a dozen candidates for local city councils, mayor duties and school board gathered Monday night for a candidates forum hosted by St. Stephen Christian-Methodist-Episcopal Church.

Each was allotted three minutes to introduce themselves, talk about their platform and answer a dedicated question.

Vacaville, Travis school board races set – Daily Republic

Five people are running to fill three seats on the Vacaville School District governing board this fall.

Two incumbents, Michele Dally and John Jansen, will campaign along with Khala Hastings, Michael Silva and Kristina Bell.

Bell was the last candidate to file Wednesday before the filing period closed. Thomas Kutz had pulled papers, but chose not to run.

Travis School District’s Trustee Area 1 got a single candidate for an open seat when Adrian Saiz filed for office Wednesday. Four candidates seek two Area 2 seats. They are incumbent Riita DeAnda, Janet Forbes, Russ Barrington and Vinh “Devin” Ma.

School board races in Fairfield, Vacaville and Suisun City are taking form as the candidate filing period for some of the seats is set to close Friday.

The races now range from the Vacaville School District, where five people are looking to run for three available seats, to one of Travis School District’s trustee areas where no one is yet running.

Mayrene Bates and Dana Dean are expected to run unopposed to keep their Solano County Board of Education trustee area seats since they are the only ones who have filed for their respective seats.

Do you live within Travis Unified boundaries, which include two elementaries in Vacaville, and want to make a difference toward the fiscal and policy direction of the Fairfield-based school district?

Three seats on the five-member governing board are up for election on Nov. 6.

One is Trustee Area 1, which consists of all areas within the boundaries of Travis Air Force Base; and there are two vacancies for Trustee Area 2, which consists of the remaining district areas, Annie Arthur, the administrative assistant to Superintendent Pamela Conklin, noted in a press release.

Area 2 trustee John Dickerson said Friday he will not seek re-election, and former trustee Jamilah Whiteside, who represented Area 1, resigned in June.

The Travis Unified School District (TUSD) will have three district board trustee vacancies on the Nov. 6 election ballot.

There will be one vacancy for Trustee Area 1, which consists of all areas within the boundaries of Travis Air Force Base and two vacancies for Trustee Area 2, which consists of the remaining TUSD area.

A local or regional board of education has one of the most important responsibilities in our society — connecting the will of the community to the education of its children. Its decisions affect the lives of students and their parents, the livelihoods of those the district employs and the economic well-being of the community.

Travis district, teachers’ union wrangle over kindergarten program – Daily Republic

Starting this fall, the Travis School District will offer full-day kindergarten at all of its elementary sites, broadening a long-existing option the district has had for extended kindergarten.

The plan will affect as many as 400 children within the district and is a move the district made in anticipation of ballooning enrollments expected in the coming years with developments of Fairfield subdivisions within the district’s boarders.

District officials and representatives from the Travis Unified Teacher’s Association are wrangling over some of the final details of the program, with about 50 district teachers, supported by some parents, attending the district’s Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday to voice concerns over the negotiations, according to union bargaining leader Sydney Lundy.

Facilities Master Plan up for review by Travis Unified School District – The Reporter

Recommendations for the district’s Facilities Master Plan and clarification of the January cash payment of health and welfare benefits to unionized employees are on the agenda when Travis Unified leaders meet tonight in Fairfield.

Superintendent Pamela Conklin and Cathy Dominico, of Capitol PFG, a Sacramento financial advisory firm, will update the five-member governing board about the latest changes to the Facilities Master Plan, a 71-page document that will guide the district’s future capital construction and major remodeling projects.

The latest document comes after the Oct. 20 adoption of the master plan, which trustees directed administrators to set up a committee to review the capital needs for the Fairfield district. It includes two Vacaville elementary schools, Cambridge and Foxboro, and six other campuses, including Golden West Middle School and Vanden High.

All-day kindergarten coming to Travis schools with new school year – Daily Republic

Travis School District will offer full-day kindergarten classes starting with the 2018-19 school year.

“We are so excited to be able to offer a full-day kindergarten program,” district Superintendent Pam Conklin said in a statement Friday announcing the program. “The drawback has always been facilities. We are working on the necessary logistics and partnering with our union to better serve our young students and provide equity to all.”

The program will go into effect at all five elementary schools. It will match the first-grade schedule at each campus. Transitional kindergarten will remain a half-day program.

Travis Unified School District leaders to consider Safe School Plans – The Reporter

Travis Unified leaders, when they meet tonight, will consider and likely approve Safe School Plans for all district campuses, a second interim 2017-18 budget report, and agree to “sunshine” a new wage-and-benefits contract for teachers next year.

By law, California public schools are required to have a Safe School Plan that includes multiple elements: mission and vision statements, a school profile, procedures for reporting child abuse, disaster procedures, ways to notify teachers of dangerous students, a policy on sexual harassment, a schoolwide dress code, safe entrances and exits procedures, ways to ensure a safe and orderly environment, and rules and procedures on school discipline.

The district operates eight campuses, including two in Vacaville, Cambridge and Foxboro elementaries; two elementaries, Travis and Scandia, on Travis Air Force Base; and Golden West Middle and Vanden High schools.

Teachers contract offer heads to Travis school board – Daily Republic

Travis School District trustees have scheduled a public hearing Tuesday on their initial 2018-19 contract offer to the Travis Unified Teachers Association.

That initial proposal does not include details, such as a salary offer, but rather just those articles in the contract that will be subject to negotiations, a district official explained.

The board is also scheduled to recognize the district’s top teachers: Paul Kruckewitt, Cambridge Elementary School; Kerry Ann Sullivan, Center Elementary; Jan Bishop, Foxboro Elementary; Jennifer Slaughter, Scandia Elementary; Gena Rickon, Travis Elementary; Jasen Yung, Golden West Middle School; Jason Ott, Travis Education Center/Community Day School; and Marilyn Lewis, Vanden High School.

Travis school trustees approve 2 employee contracts – Daily Republic

Travis School District trustees Tuesday approved the 2017-18 contracts with the Travis Unified Teachers Association and California School Employees Association, Travis Chapter 454.

The votes were 4-1 with Trustee Angela Weinzinger dissenting.

Weinzinger said in transcribed comments from district staff that as an elected official, she has been entrusted by taxpayers to make decisions for the district with the fiscal responsibility to those taxpayers and the solvency of the district in mind.

“I am in total agreement that our staff at (the Travis district) are very deserving of the raise and increase in benefits. They are incredible at what they do,” Weinzinger said in the transcribed comments. “But as I look to the future, I am concerned that down the line we will not be faced with even bigger financial issues.

Employee contracts on Travis Unified School District agenda – The Reporter

Routine approval of new employee contracts and three reports — the California School Dashboard, Federal Impact Aid, and projected enrollment — are on the agenda when Travis Unified leaders meet tonight in Fairfield.

The five-member governing board is expected to OK a teachers wage-and-benefits pact for the 2017-18 year, retroactive to Jan. 1.

District officials and negotiators for the 285-member Travis Unified Teachers Association huddled periodically for more than eight months before agreeing, last month, to a 3.25 percent wage hike and $100 per month in health benefits, or about 3.75 percent overall salary increase. Additionally, workday hours were established for district psychologists program specialists, and nurses. The agreement will add $1.2 million to the district’s expenses during the contract year, according to agenda documents.
