Daily Republic: Fairfield-Suisun school sports, clubs, teaching positions survive

FAIRFIELD — Another tumultuous budget-cutting season is coming to a quiet close with a happier ending in the Fairfield-Suisun School District.

One meeting ago, parents, athletes and the community stormed the school board chambers to protest the elimination of all high school sports and popular activities like yearbook, student government and Junior ROTC.

With dozens of empty seats before them, the school board Thursday approved contracts with teachers and classified workers who gave back to save jobs, high school sports and clubs and restored funding for classroom supplies, adult education and independent study.

The $1.9 million in savings helped ease the pain of the $6.5 million the board cut in February to close next year’s deficit.
