Former Dixon High School assistant principal Nick Girimonte has been named to the top post at the school, it has been announced.

Brian Dolan, superintendent of the 3,500-student Dixon Unified School District, said the board voted unanimously at its June 28 meeting to name Girimonte as acting principal for the 2012-13 school year.

He replaces John Barsotti, whom trustees dismissed at their June 21 meeting, ending the former principal’s one-year tenure on June 30. The dismissal came after regionwide publicity for what became known as “Promgate,” when 35 Dixon High leadership students were denied entry to their prom after school officials found a water bottle onboard a chartered bus that allegedly contained alcohol.

Dolan could not be reached for comment Thursday, but, in a press release, he recommended that the board appoint Girimonte “to ensure a smooth transition and that a principal would be in place by the start of the school year,”
