Daily Republic: Fairfield High plans visual and performing arts academy

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield High School plans to open the Visual and Performing Arts Academy next fall to capitalize on strong drama and band programs.

A pilot program of sorts is already in place at the school, merging traditional learning with all aspects of arts and music. Those involved said they already see the results of the experimental program and look forward to implementing it full time.

Calling it a school within a school, students integrate several subjects at once. Instead of just reading a novel, drama students act it out while the school band provides the score. Some students take part in set design, others write material for the performance and students learn about the time period as part of a history class. Even lighting and sound double as science lessons.
