Like most school districts in California, Vacaville Unified recently adopted a new policy against bullying, expanding long-standing guidelines to include cyberbullying, the sending of harassing statements or images, threats or sounds via a telephone, the Internet, social media or other 21st-century technology.
“I’m really excited to have this policy passed and having it implemented,” said board of trustees president Michael Kitzes, who cast one of five affirmative votes at the June 28 board meeting.
“I think it’s extremely important,” continued the longtime licensed marriage and family therapist in Vacaville. “Bullying is really detrimental for the academic environment. It’s the opposite of safety. We want kids to feel safe when they come into a classroom.”
He said the state Department of Education and school districts, in general, “are taking an active role” in bullying prevention.
