Solano County higher education adjusts well to outbreak guidelines – Daily Republic

If there is a silver lining in the Covid-19 outbreak that has so many individuals and organizations practicing social distancing, remote working and distance learning, the students, staff and faculty at Touro University California, as well as Solano Community College, have found it.

Both schools have programs that deal directly with the crisis in some way, with Touro’s numerous public health and health care graduate programs, and Solano College’s Nursing, EMT and Fire Academy programs, and the transition from a primarily on-campus setting to an online format was as smooth as possible.

Solano College set to declare Covid-19 emergency; Cal Maritime adjusts – Daily Republic

Solano Community College board members are scheduled Wednesday to declare a local emergency exists due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The resolution would give Superintendent-President Celia Esposito-Noy a number of unilateral powers “to ensure the continuation of public education through remote operations or other methods as appropriate, and preserve the health and safety of the district’s students and staff,” the document to the board states.

Longtime coach Ann Talamantes-Ristow headed to Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame – Times-Herald

After a successful high school career playing basketball at Petaluma High, Ann Talamantes-Ristow was at a crossroads when she got hurt in 1986 with a knee injury during her first season at Santa Rosa Junior College.

“Yeah I’ve been thinking about that period of my life, that fork in the road a little,” Talamantes-Ristow said last week. “When I hurt my knee I thought, that’s it for me and basketball.”

Thankfully for thousands of student athletes in the area, Talamantes-Ristow turned a bad break into a very good one and after contemplating briefly about becoming an athletic trainer, she decided to become a coach. It’s in that field she made a huge impact coaching basketball, badminton, volleyball and softball at Hogan and Jesse Bethel high schools as well as Solano Community College.

American Canyon HS Academic Decathlon Team Advances To State | Napa Valley, CA Patch

The Academic Decathlon team from American Canyon High School finished in third place at this year’s North Bay Region Academic Decathlon, held Saturday at Solano Community College in Fairfield. The students are now preparing to compete in the California Decathlon March 27-28 in Sacramento.

“Not everyone was able to medal individually this year,” Gonzalez said. “Not only did my students need to beat the other team members for a top-three finish, they also had to win against each other.”

The team from American Canyon represented Napa County in the competition among 15 teams —and 250 students — from high schools in Napa, Solano, Sonoma, Yolo, Lake and Mendocino counties.

The students were visibly nervous as they shuffled into the gym Saturday at Solano Community College for the final contest in this year’s regional Academic Decathlon.

Approximately 300 students from 15 high schools – including Rodriguez, Vanden, Buckingham Charter Magnet, Dixon, Vallejo, Jesse Bethel and MIT Academy – came out for some friendly competition at the North Bay Region’s Academic Decathlon.

Other teams came in from Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma and Yolo counties.

Approximately 300 students from 15 high schools – including Dixon, Rodriguez, Vanden, Buckingham Charter, Jesse Bethel, MIT Academy and Vallejo – will compete in the North Bay Region’s Academic Decathlon scheduled Saturday at Solano Community College.

“I am excited to see Academic Decathlon growing in our county and region. Students deserve tremendous credit and praise for their teamwork, dedication and work ethic in representing their schools at the North Bay Regional Academic Decathlon Competition,” Ken Scarberry, program director of Youth Development for the Solano County Office of Education, said in a statement.

Bill would pay CSU tuition for those who earn associate degrees – Daily Republic

Solano Community College students who earn an associate degree would get two years of tuition paid for at a California State University if legislation authored by Los Angeles Assemblyman Miguel Santiago becomes law.

“The cost of a bachelor’s degree is just too damn high. Our students deserve the chance to earn a degree without being burdened by overwhelming debt,” Santiago said in a statement after a press conference held this week to announce Assembly Bill 1862.

“Providing two years of tuition-free CSU means students will save tens of thousands of dollars while earning their bachelor’s degree. AB 1862 puts that dream within reach for California students and their families,” Santiago said in the statement.

New Year’s resolution run set Saturday at Solano College – Daily Republic

The New Year’s Run/Walk Party for Solano County’s 6th Annual Resolution 5K and 1 Mile event will occur Saturday.

The run begins at 8 a.m. at Solano Community College, 4000 Suisun Valley Road in rural Fairfield.

It will feature a flat, scenic course that takes participants through the campus and linear park trail at Solano Community College.

A SolTrans bus with pictures to promote student enrollment and the “Ride Free with your Student ID” fare greeted Solano Community College students and staff when they opened the spring semester Tuesday.

The unveiling happened near Building 1400 of Solano Community College, 4000 Suisun Valley Road, in rural Fairfield.

The SolTrans SolanoExpress has been given the new “wrap” as part of a partnership with SolTrans, the Solano Transportation Authority and the college.

Solano College receives upgrade in credit rating, refinances bonds – Daily Republic

The Solano Community College District earlier this month received an upgrade in its credit rating from Moody’s Investors Service.

The district then refinanced bonds Nov. 13 to save taxpayers almost $21 million, according to a press release.

Moody’s raised its rating on the district’s general obligation bonds from AA3 to AA2, meaning “high quality and very low credit risk.”

Solano College ceremony paves way for new library – Daily Republic

Like many of the well-worn books housed inside it, the Solano Community College library has some visible signs of aging.

Opened in 1971, the venerable Building 100 at the school’s main campus in rural Fairfield will soon be replaced by a nearly 60,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art library building that is expected to be ready in time for the fall 2021 school term.

School officials participated Wednesday in a ceremony to break ground at the campus to announce the replacement of the current library with a new library and learning center, which comes with a construction cost of nearly $39 million, funded jointly through Proposition 51 – a $9 billion statewide bond, passed in November 2016, to fund K-12 and community college projects – and Measure Q – the $348 million bond passed by local voters by November 2012.

Solano career fair focuses on auto tech positions – Daily Republic

A career fair offered by the Solano County Workforce Development Board focusing on jobs in the automobile tech field will occur Nov. 15 at the Auto Tech Center at the Solano Community College campus in Vallejo.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The auto center is located at 1687 N. Ascot Parkway.

Eighteen businesses are scheduled to participate, with jobs in more than 16 categories, ranging from auto/diesel mechanics to body shop and paint work, to parts clerks and sales, to school bus technician.

Remembering Vanden, Solano coaching legend Ron Beverly – Daily Republic

After nearly 30 years at the Daily Republic – I’ll hit the big 3-0 around Thanksgiving – a goal of mine is to retire before needing to do tribute stories on coaching who were before or during my time. I mentioned that to Ron Beverly about two months ago.

When writing about the passing of Vanden legends Ed Serpas and Jim Boyd, a go-to guy was Beverly, who’d played for both during the school’s first year and took over for the former as Vikings football coach.

Solano largely unaffected by power shut-offs but SCC’s Fairfield campus closes – The Reporter

Pacific Gas & Electric’s Public Safety Power Shut-off that began early Wednesday, an effort to minimize outbreaks of equipment-caused wildland fires, did not seem to affect Solano County in any major way, a county official reported.

“Nothing serious has happened,” said Solano County Deputy Sheriff Cully Pratt.

But he urged drivers to slow down, drive safely and observe courtesy at any four-way stops with traffic signals darkened by an outage. He reminded drivers to yield to the driver on the right at four-way stops.

Also saying “The winds are here,” Pratt expected gusts to pick up later Wednesday evening.

Solano College celebrates Constitution Day – The Reporter

The community is invited to a Constitution Day talk Thursday at Solano Community College, 4000 Suisun Valley Road in Fairfield.

Keynote speaker Don Specter, executive director of the Prison Law Center, will speak on the Eighth Amendment and the landmark case, Plata v. Brown 563 U.S. 493 (2011).

His talk begins at 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts/Theatre , Building 1200. The event is free, as is parking in Lot 2 after 4:30 p.m.

Schentrup, Sports Medicine Visit Vanden High School – Solano College

The Solano College Sports Medicine program teamed up with the Solano County Office of Education to visit Vanden High School this week.

Solano College athletic trainer and sports medicine faculty Bailey Schentrup spent the day teaching students from Miss Smith’s medical science classes hands-on skills such as athletic taping techniques, basic anatomy palpation skills, and stretching techniques.

Students were introduced to several therapeutic exercise fields of study, including the Solano College Sports Medicine/Athletic Training major and its courses.

Pro tennis event at Solano Community College helps advance USTA program – The Reporter

Young tennis fans will get to learn about the game again this October when the NorthBay Healthcare Men’s ProChampionship returns to Solano Community College.

The professional tournament benefits the Chris Cammisa Tennis and Education Foundation, a nonprofit that not only helpedestablish the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Solano College, but also provides tennis and a related educational program tounderserved youth in Solano County.

One of the ways of reaching out to youth during the tournament is by using the U.S. Tennis Association’s Net GenerationProgram. The mission of “Net Gen” is to introduce children to tennis — a sport they might not normally be exposed to but couldpotentially play the rest of their lives. Racquets, balls and pop-up nets are all provided.

Rotary scholars sign contracts to help in college journey – Daily Republic

Nine students from the Fairfield Police Activities League on Tuesday were promised financial and mentoring support as they launch their college educations at Solano Community College.

The students signed contracts as part of the fifth annual Rotary Success Scholars program during a ceremony held at The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Suisun City.

“These are nine students who would absolutely not be able to go to college otherwise,” Tara Dacus, a member of the Fairfield-Suisun Rotary Club and one of the three founders of the scholars program, said in an interview.
