Vallejo schools’ STEAM plans seen as critical to city’s future – Vallejo Times Herald

Vallejo schools’ new STEAM initiative will not only help students become college- and career-ready, but also have far-reaching effects for the community at large, school officials said Wednesday.

“It is a seed being planted in the ground. It will have repercussions in our city that will far outlive us, and 100 years from now, we hope that our children and our children’s children will definitely be better because of this,” said LaTonya Derbigny, director of school and student accountability for the Vallejo City Unified School District.

Derbigny discussed the district’s middle school STEAM program — an acronym for science, technology, engineering, art and math — during a special “showcase” school board meeting at Franklin Middle School.
