Solano Community College student Diana Solis was honored by the college for her quick action in the library.

Solis was studying in the library earlier this month when she noticed another student collapse and begin having a seizure.

Without hesitation, Solis rushed to assist. She quickly supported the student’s head, preventing it from hitting the ground while the seizure continued.

Tutoring contract, AP literature book, revisions to supes’ contract on VUSD agenda – The Vacaville Reporter

A tutoring contract for Fairfield Charter Elementary, information about a science fiction novel recommended for an AP Literature course at Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy, and proposed revisions to the superintendent’s contract are on the agenda when Vacaville Unified School District leaders meet Thursday evening.

Fairmont Principal Shayla Bowman requests the school district’s governing board approve a contract with Next Steps Academy, aka Sylvan Tutoring, to provide academic support and tutoring services at a cost not greater than $113,100.

According to agenda documents, the contract calls for Sylvan to provide support and tutoring services to all students in small groups, in person or virtually. Services include data, pre-assessments, communication with site staff, student attendance, student incentives, student individualized learning plan, ongoing assessments and trained teachers.

Fairfield students received $10K PG&E scholarship | dailyrepublic.com

Pamela Guzman, of Fairfield, was among the 60 students who received a PG&E Corporation Foundation 2024 Better Together STEM Scholarships.

“The scholarships are awarded to students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines. STEM education fosters ingenuity, creativity, and experimentation, leading to new ideas, innovations, and technological advancements that can have global impact,” the foundation said in a statement.

Guzman was awarded $10,000.

Will C. Wood to hold crafts fair in December | dailyrepublic.com

Will C. Wood High School is hosting its second annual Winter Vendor Fair on Dec. 8.

“Will C. Wood’s first annual event was centered around being a charitable event in which we could give back to our community. I am pleased to report that … we successfully raised $11,981.05 last December,” Breanne Sirokman, the Associated Student Body activities director for Will C. Wood, said in a statement.

She said 100% of those proceeds went toward student sponsorships, the Vacaville Unified School District’s music program, and even the Vacaville United Soccer Club.

‘Anticipation’ in the air at groundbreaking of new gym – Times Herald Online

After seven years of being condemned, a new gym is finally coming back at 1 Positive Place on Mare Island.

Griffin Technology Academy Schools and Mare Island Technology Academy last week hosted the groundbreaking for the new gym, featuring staff and student speakers as well as local representatives and dignitaries. The new gym will allow students to have expanded space for physical education and also include additional classrooms.

The event came about a month after Griffin Technology Academies announced it had received approval from the Vallejo City Unified School District and signed a construction contract with a local general contractor.

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is offering three 2024 Future Leaders scholarships.

“This scholarship is designed to support and empower high school seniors and college freshmen from Solano County as they pursue higher education and work toward becoming the leaders of tomorrow,” the chamber announced.

An essay (500-700 words) or a short video is required and must include personal background, future goals and aspirations, involvement in school and the community and how this scholarship will help in achieving academic and career objectives.

Students at Grange Middle School will be exploring “a wide range of artistic mediums while tapping into their personal and cultural experiences” through a new art program started this year.

Teacher Jeannine La Bate leads the program designed to have the students engage in hands-on activities such as drawing, painting, sewing, sculpture, printmaking and photography.

“Students will use personal and cultural experiences as subject matter to make works of art to be displayed in the art room and school exhibitions for everyone to admire,” La Bate said in a statement released by the district.

Summit for young leaders to be held in Vallejo on Oct. 19 – Times Herald Online

The “Brown Girls In Congress Leadership Summit” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 to help empower young girls by understanding the political system.

Girls ages 8 – 17 are invited to attend the summit from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will be held at Solano Community College Vallejo Center, 545 Columbus Parkway.

Organizers say the event will aim to empower the next generation of future leaders by “introducing young girls to our political process and show them how our political system is structured.”

Fitch Ratings — a global rating agency — has affirmed Vallejo City Unified School District’s issuer default rating at ‘A’ and its unlimited tax general obligation (GO) bonds at ‘AAA’. The rating outlook remains stable, and the rating has been removed from “under criteria observation.”

Affirming the district’s ratings shows Fitch’s confidence in the district’s economic stability and creditworthiness. The removal from “under criteria observation” indicates the district’s improved compliance with Fitch’s rating standards.

New federal sexual harassment and discrimination regulations extending protection to gender identity went into effect in August, but a legal battle more than 1,500 miles away is preventing hundreds of California K-12 schools and universities from enacting policy changes.

Since the Biden administration announced the changes to the 1972 Title IX law, federal judges have issued injunctions blocking the regulations in 26 states. While California is not among the states challenging the new rules, at least 98 K-12 schools and 687 colleges and universities in the state have been impacted by an injunction issued by a federal court judge in Kansas.

Vallejo schools celebrate fiscal milestone, but possible school closures loom – Vallejo Sun

The Vallejo City Unified School District took a major step towards achieving financial independence and stability by paying off a $60 million receivership loan from the state after 20 years this summer, but school closures could still be on the horizon for the district.

Newly hired superintendent Rubén Aurelio told the Vallejo Sun in an interview that the district still has to make budget cuts and is considering school closures because it’s been losing enrollment, which brings in funds.

Anna Kyle Elementary School is the first in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District to welcome electric vehicle charging stations.

It’s equipped with two dual-chargers, providing four parking spaces dedicated to electric vehicle users.

The district plans to expand this green initiative by adding more charging stations, including four dual-chargers (eight parking spaces) at the Public Safety Academy in the summer of 2025 and two dual-chargers (four parking spaces) at Armijo High School after that.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond is calling for donations today to support students, families, and educators in light of a rash of wildfires taking place throughout the State of California. Superintendent Thurmond is currently in the Inland Empire, a region affected by some of the most devastating fires, providing on-the-ground support for emergency response in San Bernardino County and coordinating a statewide call for donations.

“Our school communities are hurting due to the wildfires that are, once again, ravaging our state,” Thurmond said. “Californians are resilient and generous and always have each other’s backs in times of crisis. Let’s continue to come together for our communities in need so they can get back on their feet.”

Vacaville Unified School District leaders are expected to approve an annual complete financial report for the fiscal year 2023-24 when they meet Thursday night in Vacaville.

Known as “unaudited actuals,” the report shows the district’s actual revenue and expenses before they are formally audited, generally by an independent financial firm.

Kelly Burks, associate superintendent of business and administrative services, will make the presentation to the governing board.

Fairfield High School is hosting a “Banda Night,” with cultural music, food and dancing, on Friday.

“Banda Night promises an evening of fellowship and cultural exploration, giving attendees a chance to experience the rich traditions of Hispanic music while enjoying local food vendors and activities. From live performances to community-building, there’s something for everyone to enjoy,” organizers said in a statement.

Banda is a traditional Mexican mores; the music typically featuring brass, percussion and string instruments.

The Fairfield Cordelia Library will host a financial planning workshop on Sept. 19.

The library is partnering with Bay College Planning for the one-hour, free workshop for parents and guardians of high school-aged students who plan to attend a college or university after graduation.

Topics to be addressed include financial aid application process; colleges that offer merit aid; developing a college funding plan; how to maximize scholarships; and CT and SAT exam preparation.

Sixth-grade reconfiguration, Golden West expansion goes before Travis school board | dailyrepublic.com

Travis Unified trustees have some familiar business to consider when they meet Tuesday.

The school board will be updated on developer fees, and will consider taking action on the proposed sixth-grade reconfiguration plan and the Golden West Middle School Expansion Project.

The trustees meet at 5 p.m. and will immediately go into closed session, during which they will discuss Superintendent Tiffany Benson’s evaluation and labor negotiations. They will reconvene to the public session afterward.
