CDE Announces Updated School Air Quality Guidance – Year 2024 (CA Dept of Education)

The California Department of Education (CDE) is announcing updated School Outdoor Air Quality Activity Recommendations (PDF), intended to provide California’s local educational agencies (LEAs) with resources to make informed decisions about conducting school activities and closures based on local air quality conditions when their communities are impacted by wildfire smoke.

With record-setting wildfires occurring year after year, California schools are impacted by smoke now more than ever. These necessary, clear guidelines will help advance local conversations among school districts, public health officers, air districts, and the community and provide educational leaders with the information they need to take actions that best protect student health.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond began his tenure during the devastating 2018 Camp Fire and has led through some of the largest, deadliest, and most destructive wildfires in California’s history. Superintendent Thurmond and the CDE continue to work tirelessly to secure resources for devastated communities and support the well-being of students and educators during worsening natural disasters intensified by climate change. In response to these conditions, Superintendent Thurmond also established the first Emergency Services Team at the CDE to ensure that schools have the emergency support that they need to respond to environmental disasters that occur year-round.

By Richard Bammer

Vacaville Unified School District leaders appear to have a relatively light agenda when they meet Thursday night in Vacaville.

The governing board likely will adopt a resolution declaring support for Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31, the nationwide campaign — this year themed is “Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free” — to join in tobacco, alcohol and other drug-prevention programs, activities, and, according to wording in the agenda documents, “making a visible statement and commitment to healthy, drug-free communities.”

If excellence is what students at the Shereene Wilkerson Academy of Excellence seek, they need only look to their new namesake for an example that is, well, excellent.

Wilkerson served with the Vacaville Police Department in the 1970s as the city’s first School Resource Officer and set up the Youth Services Section for the department, which still serves community youth today. In 1980, she started working for the Vacaville Unified School District as a teacher, where she became Teacher of the Year in her first year at Vacaville High School. Wilkerson eventually became a principal and was later promoted to the district office, where she finished her career as Associate Superintendent.

Families enjoy animals, pumpkin patch at Loma Vista Harvest Festival – Times Herald Online

By Thomas Gase

Loma Vista Farm is celebrating its 50th anniversary — and with it another Harvest Festival.

The annual event, a longtime favorite, features families showing up as much as a half-hour early to experience train rides, a pumpkin patch, face painting, crafts, snow cones, and of course animals like chickens, horses, cows and alpacas.

“My favorite part about this event every year is seeing the kids,” Loma Vista Farm Events Chair Jennifer Shiner said. “I love seeing them getting the chance to experience and enjoy the farm in the middle of this community. The kids love the horses and the chickens are always a big hit with them. And I’m a big fan of the Apple Cider Press that we have. I love that the kids get a chance to see how stuff gets made or how stuff gets done.”

Vallejo school board elections increasingly uncompetitive since adopting districts – Vallejo Sun

In recent years, elections for Vallejo City Unified School District’s Board of Education trustees have become increasingly uncompetitive. Starting in December, it’s likely that only one of the board’s five trustees will have faced an election opponent. The other four either will have run unopposed or were appointed by the board.

This year, Board President Latyna Young, who was first elected in 2020, is running unopposed, as is candidate Dean Hodges in Area 2, which represents North Vallejo. Someone could file paperwork as a write-in candidate before this year’s Oct. 22 deadline, but write-in victories, though not impossible, are extremely rare.

Homecoming Brings Win | Independent Voice

By Debra Dingman

The 2024 Dixon High School Homecoming could not have ended better with the Rams bashing the Woodland High Wolves 21 to 3 last Friday night. The Rams were three down in the second half but got a second wind and came back strong.

“I believed the boys would win but there are always homecoming distractions and I think that is what attributed to the slow first half start,” said Coach Wes Besseghini, who is in his 14th year as head coach.

“The second half was all about execution and not making mistakes. I was extremely proud of our defense for keeping us in the game during the first half when our offense struggled to get going,” Besseghini added.
